The “About” Page
I’m going to do this in a question and answer format as that seems the popular way to do these things nowadays. It’s also much easier than trying to come up with a full writeup that’s properly structured, and I’m lazy.
Q: So what’s this site about?
A: Nothing! It’s a site about nothing, isn’t that a novel idea? I’ll bet no one’s ever thought of that before. This should be great… But really, I’m just a guy that wanted his own place on the internet, and now I have it. The site, at the moment, is mostly just a blog for me and my friends. I’m also using it to host files that I want to share with friends and family, such as the pictures in the gallery, and experiment with PHP, MySQL, and web development in general.
Q: What is “therks”?
A: Technically it should be spelled TheRKS. ”RKS” being my initials. I was trying to come up with a domain name that was short, easy to spell, and hopefully easy to remember. I had thrown my name into one of those domain generating scripts and it gave me TheRob.info or something. Well I didn’t like the .info part, but liked the ring of it. Unfortunately TheRob.com was taken, and so were the other TLD’s I wanted. I had been running a server off my home computer via no-ip.com’s service at rks.no-ip.com, so I derived from that and therks.com was available, so I grabbed it. I thought: It’s short - only 6 letters, it’s a .com, and it’s even pronounceable.
Q: Who are you?
A: My name is Rob, I live in a small city in British Columbia (Canada) called Kitimat, which has a population of about 10,000 (and shrinking). I work part-time for a contract security company and used to deliver pizza. I tinker a lot with web design and scripting, using HTML, PHP, MySQL, etc. I’ve also been using a scripting language called AutoIt for a few years (not web-based), and I’d like to think I’m fairly proficient with it. I occasionally like to express my artistic side with wallpapers and other graphics, and do the odd photo editing. I also play video games now and then, but I’d usually rather be on the computer (although some games really grab me). I read a fair amount, fantasy-fiction mostly (David Eddings, Terry Goodkind), although not so much lately, but you turn me loose in Wikipedia and I can be lost for hours just reading and learning trivial things. For example: Did you know that a frog uses it’s eyes to help it swallow food?
