My Uneducated Opinion on Windows Vista

So, I set up a new computer and a new laptop for my boss whom I work for at a pizza place. Both came with Vista preinstalled. First Impression: Very pretty, and very easy to tell why you need a work horse of a Graphics Card just to use it. After working with it for some time I came to realize that it almost seems like they changed stuff around just for the mere sake of changing stuff around. It also became very quickly evident that it’s loaded with bugs and as with almost everything, was rushed to release. Although I must say to Microsoft’s credit, Explorer crashes are handled much more gracefully than they ever were previously, it’s just too bad that they happen every couple minutes or so. To sum up, I came to hate Vista even quicker than I expected to.
I have a quick hypothesis on why this is in the grand scheme of things. Microsoft has been very adept at taking care of the deeper technical aspects of the operating systems it has created. Look at the technical innovation that was Windows NT that became the basis all there successful operating systems since (although Vista is also based on NT, how successful it is remains to be seen.) Besides beautifying the operating system (which I really don’t think is necessary. ie: I use Windows XP with the Classic Desktop Theme,) I don’t see that Vista has really done all that much for innovating Windows. But that isn’t to say that it has done nothing. Windows Desktop Search is one thing I personally find to be a valuable Vista innovation.
As a little FYI for consumers, Microsoft will discontinue retail sales and licensing to OEMs of Microsoft Windows XP by June 30th, 2008. Which leads into another thing that has been happening at the detriment to Microsoft’s Windows Vista and those who might wish to use it is the lack of legacy hardware support. Because of this some IT managers have been pushing back against Microsoft’s Discontinuing of XP sales.
